As with all High Speed Internet Connections TCS Wireless is
always on or connected at all times to the internet. This gives rise to
several security issues that are addressed below and how you can
protect your computer against the many exploits of the internet.
Additional services and pricing can be found here.
Virus
Protection:
Viruses are malious programs that annoy, damage data or attempt to
control the PC. Any Computer that is connected to the Internet (or not)
should have a virus
scanner installed. There are many different Anti-Virus Software
Programs available. The main features to look for in a virus scanner is
(1). It will automatically update the virus definition files. This will
insure that you have they latest defense against new viruses. Also, set
this to update on a daily basis. (2). It will scan your Email for
viruses and take appropriate action to avoid accidentally opening
attachments. (3)Scans both Incoming and outgoing files. In efforts to
improve our Internet Service, TCS offers free email scanning for
viruses and TCS offers a virus scanner for PCs as an additional service
to our wireless customers.
Spyware/Adware/Popups:
The most common cause of slow Internet speed is due to Popups and
Spyware/Adware. Not only do they slow down your PC, they are very
annoying and are an invasion of your privacy. Spyware and Popups are
marketing attempts to lure internet users to Web Sites to purchase
items or the Spyware Company receives revenue from these
Manufacturing/Supply Companies to track where you are going on the
internet and in turn sell this information to Manufacturing/Supply
Companies or other Marketing Companies. Spyware Companies also are paid
for each "hit" that directs an internet user to a Manufacturing/Supply
Company's Web Site. This is only the tip of the iceberg. Due to the
recent growth of online purchasing these marketing ploys are getting
worse. An estimation of around 80% of all PCs on the internet has
spyware installed. In efforts to improve our Internet service, TCS
offers Spyware/Adware/Popup blockers as an addtional service to our
wireless customers. If you feel that you have Spyware installed on your
PC let us know and we can check your PC or click here (SpybotSD14) to download a free spyware
scanner.
SPAM:
The term "spam" comes from the Monty Python sketch where the name of
the canned meat product is used so often that it crowds everything else
out. Spam is basically unsolicited "junk" e-mail sent to large numbers
of people to promote products or services. As with
Spyware/Adware/Popups, marketing companies / spammers receive revenue
from this type of advertising service. Sexually explicit unsolicited
e-mail is one of the worst types of spam. In efforts to improve our
Internet service, TCS includes spam blocking on our email server.
Firewall
Protection:
Because your computer is constantly connected to the internet it is
almost impossible to know if your computer is being accessed by someone
or something over the internet without a firewall. Without
firewall protection your computer may have open ports that allow
unwanted access to your PC. A Firewall is basically a zone set between
your PC and the internet that can be configured to block access to your
computer. There are basically two types which are software firewalls
and hardware firewalls. The software firewalls are installed on the PC
itself. This takes up system resources but does allow for additional
security settings for the advanced PC users.
The Hardware is a seperate device that is installed between your PC and
the Internet Access Provider. Some people even run both software and
hardware firewalls.
File
Sharing and Secure Sites:
If you do not need file sharing on your PC the first thing to do is
turn it off. This allows anyone on the internet to access your computer
and read, write or delete your files. If you transmit
financial information most sites are already secure. Just make sure
that your passwords are not stored on your PC that someone could
download.
If you are not familiar with File Sharing and securing your PC
please visit the site that pertains to your operating system or
contact TCS and inquire about a security review.
